THE PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS

An Internet-based Scavenger Hunt

What is the Periodic Table of Elements anyway?
The Periodic Table of Elements is a chart that is used to organize the different elements that exist here on earth. The elements are arranged into rows and columns according to their different properties. Why you ask...because it makes life easier for those of us who deal with them whether you're a famous chemist, a science teacher or a student like yourself! Look at the chart above. That's it ladies and gentlemen...the one and the only (drum role please)...PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS!!!!

Okay, so what now?
Well, now that you've been formally introduced to the Periodic Table, let me tell you about what you'll be doing while you are visiting this site. Are you excited yet? You should be! As you work through this page you'll be completing a scavenger hunt using the Internet to find your answers. All of the questions deal with the Periodic Table of Elements which you will be answering on your answer sheet. If you need an answer sheet, click here. To find the answer to each question, JUST CLICK IT! Each question is an actual link to the site where you will find what you are looking for. You'll need to read through the site (maybe not the entire thing) to find the correct answer. After you record your answer, come back to this page to get the next question. Happy Scavenging!

Let's see how much there is to know about
this chart we call the Periodic Table!

  1. Who designed the first Periodic Table of Elements and what year was it published in?

  2. How many elements are known to exist today?
How many elements were known when the first periodic table was created?

  3. Each element has its own number. What does this number mean?

  4. How are the elements arranged in the Periodic Table?

  5. The Periodic Table is divided into rows and columns. What are the rows called? What are the columns called?

What do you think about this? (Use your own brain for this one!)

When the first periodic table was designed a long time ago, not all of the elements had been discovered yet.
Do you think that the elements in the periodic table today are the only elements that exist? What are your thoughts on the possibility that there are other elements out there that we haven't discovered yet?
Use the back of your answer sheet to share your brilliant thoughts!
