NORTH

1.      During the early 1800’s, what event happened in New York State to increase the transportation of people and goods across the state and out to the Mid-West?

2.      By the 1830’s, a new invention helped replaced the Erie Canal to make the transportation of goods and people even faster and easier.  Now you could travel all the way West as far as the Mississippi River.  What was it?

3. During the early 1800’s, what event happened in New York State to increase the transportation of people and goods across the state and out to the Mid-West?

4. Most immigrants stayed in the Northeast to find jobs.  As cities grew larger, farms grew smaller.  A huge work force was waiting to be hired.  At the same time three men invented three different machines that started a chain reaction to build factories that needed this work force.  Name these three men and their inventions?

5. With the invention of factories and mass production of goods, the need for cotton increased.  The cotton gin made cotton a valuable cash crop and “King” in the South.  Plantations in the South grew larger and wealthier.  Almost ¾ of the world’s cotton was grown in the US.   They needed more slaves to help plant the cotton.  The life of a slave became intolerable.  Slaves ran away to the North and freedom.  What operation and famous ex-slave helped these runaways reach their destinations?  Explain how this operation was conducted.

6. By 1860 the North had most of the railroads & canals from the Northeast to the Mississippi River.  They carried goods back & forth to the Great Lakes and the Plains.  This made the Northeast the fastest growing section of the United States.  The South had few large cities and factories.  How many Northern cities had more than 20,000 people living in them?  How many factories were in operation at this time?

7. Starting in the 1830’s, escaped slaves publicly told the Northerners about their life as a slave.  Many people fought to end slavery.  What was a word used to describe someone who wanted to end slavery?

8. There were 4 important people who helped this anti-slavery feeling grow in the North.  Two were ex-slaves and two were writers.  Name them and explain what they did to flame the fires of hatred toward the South.
